GLAMPING: A SYNTHESIS OF ARCHITECTURE AND NATURE

Introduced in Korea over a decade ago, the term 'Glamping' initially missed the mark on its intended luxurious connotation, leading to the proliferation of substandard tents under the guise of upscale camping. At ArchiWorkshop, this misinterpretation inspired us to redefine Glamping—creating an opportunity for people to immerse themselves in nature while enjoying the comforts of uniquely crafted architecture. Our vision was to harmonize nature, ecological integrity, comfort, and contemporary design, giving birth to the concept of Glamping Architecture in Korea.

 

Overview
Our approach to Glamping involves integrating units into the natural landscape with minimal disruption. We have innovated various types of Glamping accommodations, including 'Stacking Doughnuts', 'Modular Floor', 'Rock Flower', 'Dynamic Triangle', and 'Leaf'. The inspiration for 'Stacking Doughnut' originated from pebbles, with each structure's placement evoking the serendipitous discovery of natural elements. The master plan reflects the paramount importance of landscape and nature's design elements.

Details
The Glamping structures are elevated on slender steel supports to minimize ground disturbance and condensation. Ventilation fans between the structure's layers promote airflow, mitigating moisture accumulation, particularly during the winter months. Warm air is recycled, a critical feature given the budget and environmental constraints. The design and positioning of the structures were meticulously planned for aesthetic appeal both day and night. We ensured that the spacing between vertical structures did not surpass the maximum width of standard membrane material, optimizing cost efficiency and the visual harmony of the joints. The membrane's translucency casts shadows that illuminate the structures with a lantern-like glow at night.

Jury Review for the Iconic Awards 2014, 'Best of Best'
The term "Glamping," blending 'camping' with 'glamour', was ingeniously adopted and redefined by ArchiWorkshop. Their innovative tent designs are categorized into the pebble-inspired 'Stacking Doughnuts' and the 'Modular Floor', based on a unique flooring system. Facilities such as toilets and showers are cleverly divided by artistically decorated walls. A dual-layered covering ensures protection against all weather conditions. The designers successfully met their challenge to provide an authentic nature experience, seamlessly integrating ecological sensitivity, comfort, and modern aesthetics at the highest level. This achievement has set a new standard for Glamping quality.

'글램핑'이라는 단어가 국내에 도입된 지 10여 년이 지났지만, 그 의미가 자칫 오용되는 경우가 있었다. 화려한 캠핑 대신 질 낮은 텐트를 설치해 돈벌이를 하는 경우를 뜻한다. 우리는 사람들이 자연을 좀 더 가까이에서 체험할 수 있으면서, 독특한 디자인의 구조물과 편안함을 느낄 수 있는 글램핑을 만들어야겠다는 생각을 하게 되었다. 자연, 생태적 가치, 편안함, 현대적인 디자인이 균형 있게 조화를 이루는 장소. 이러한 개념이 한국에서 글램핑 건축의 탄생으로 이어졌다.

개요
글램핑 유닛은 자연의 훼손를 최소화한 채 지형에 조화롭게 배치된다. 우리는 다양한 유형의 글램핑 유닛을 설계하여 '스태킹 도넛', '모듈러 플로어', '락 플라워', '다이내믹 트라이앵글', '리프'라는 이름을 지었다. '스태킹 도넛'의 기본 콘셉트는 조약돌에서 영감을 받았다. 각 파빌리온의 배치에는 자연 속에서 조약돌이나 자연 요소를 발견하는 시적 감성이 담겨 있다. 풍경과 자연의 형태가 가장 디자인적인 특성을 지니고 있음을 기억하고 마스터플랜을 기획하면서 이를 최대한 반영하고자 하였다.

디테일
글램핑 유닛 전체를 들어올려 가벼운 철제 받침대 위에 올려놓았다. 지면과 일정한 거리를 유지함으로써 결로 현상을 크게 줄일 수 있었다. 또한 외부와 내부 사이에 환기 팬을 설치하여 공기의 흐름을 원활하게 하여 특히 추운 겨울에 내부 표면에 쌓이는 습기를 감소시켰고, 데워진 공기는 재활용되었다. 제한된 비용과 주어진 환경 내에서 위의 방법은 매우 필수적이었다. 구조물의 모양과 위치는 낮과 밤에 모두 미적으로 돋보일 수 있도록 세심하게 고려하였다. 형태를 설계할 때 수직 구조물 간격이 표준 멤브레인 크기의 최대 폭을 초과하지 않도록 고려했고 이를 통해 비용을 절감하고 막 표면 사이의 접합부를 시각적으로 더 잘 구현할 수 있었다. 멤브레인의 반투명한 특성으로 인해 구조물의 그림자가 표면에 투영되면 밤에는 마치 랜턴과 같은 효과를 주었다.

'글램핑'은 '캠핑'과 '화려함'이 합쳐진 신조어이다. 건축공방은 이 단어를 받아들여 그들만의 개념을 통해 매혹적인 방식으로 재해석했다. 조약돌에서 영감을 받은 놀랍도록 시적인 스태킹 도넛과 구조적인 바닥 시스템을 기반으로 한 모듈형 플로어의 두 가지 유형으로 나뉜 텐트 구조는 시각적으로 매우 인상적이다. 화장실과 샤워실은 각각 예술 작품 같은 벽으로 분리되어 있다. 이중 레이어 외피는 모든 유형의 기상 조건으로부터 공간을 보호한다. 생태, 편안함, 현대적인 디자인을 최고 수준으로 통합하면서 자연을 직접 체험할 수 있도록 해야 한다는 디자이너들의 도전 과제는 훌륭하게 해결되었고, 글램핑의 품질 수준을 새롭게 정의하고자 하는 목표 또한 달성되었다.
